McGarvey to be new Mayor of MD

Cllr Pauric McGarvey is set to be the new Mayor of the Milford/Letterkenny Municipal District when the Annual General Meeting takes place next Tuesday. It will be the Rathmullan based public representative’s first time to be Mayor since being co-opted onto the Council in February 2023. He replaced his uncle, Ian McGarvey who had served the area for 18 years. Ian was Ireland’s oldest elected politician at the time at 92 years of age. Pauric is currently Deputy Mayor of the MD. In the 2024 local elections he took a seat to represent the Milford MD along with Cllrs Liam Blaney and Declan Meehan. The Deputy Mayor for the incoming here is understood to be Cllr Blaney. Cllr McGarvey is succeeding Cllr Ciaran Brogan. He is very much looking forward to the honour of being the Milford/Letterkenny Area’s first citizen for the next year. “I am looking forward to representing the MD at a lot of events over the next 12 months. But, it’s going to be very busy and will be demanding in terms of all the time involved. I have seen the busy year that Ciaran Brogan has had so I am preparing for that. There is a lot of good stuff going on and I want to see that continuing during my year as Mayor” Cllr McGarvey said. At the age of 82 his uncle Ian McGarvey became Ireland’s oldest Mayor and Donegal County Council’s first independent Mayor in June 2013. Then aged 85, he became Ireland’s oldest ever general election candidate at the 2016 election. He became Mayor of Letterkenny in June 2018. McGarvey was at this time approaching his 88th birthday. The AGM will take place in the Milford Public Services Centre on Tuesday.
