Cranford Football Club have commenced preparations for a 50th anniversary event that will take place on Saturday 5th September. It is going to be a very special milestone in the history of the Cranford community as the local football club looks forward to the celebrations that will include games at the park and a function in Logue’s afterwards where players past and present, family and friends will gather for what will be a night of nostalgia. The anniversary event will come at a time when the team will be playing football in Division 1 of the Donegal Junior League having been promoted last month. Cranford Football Club has etched its own unique place in the Donegal Junior League since playing their very first game in the competition back in 1976. However, way before that there are records of a very strong football tradition in the area going back to the early 1900’s. nThe Cranford Summer Cups attracted quality teams and big name players in the 1940’s, 50’s and 60’s. There were many famous games none more so than the final where a Gweedore side that included three members of the Glasgow Celtic first team were beaten in a final by a local team who had recruited the likes of Fr. Michael Sweeney, Fr. Willie McMenamin and Harry Blaney. On that day it was a result that did not go down well with the Gweedore men.
